DUNES and DUNE TOURS

The National Seashore Park, the Province Lands, the dunes and the dune shacks are not to be missed. The famous dune shacks have a special place in Provincetown history. After being abandoned for many decades, they became home to many writers and artists in the 1940's and 50's. Tennessee Williams was living in a shack as he was putting the finishing touches to "A Streetcar Names Desire". Legend has it that Marlon Brando had to hitchhike to Provincetown and trek out to the shack to audition for the role. At the Little Bar of the "A" House, you'll see photographs of those days. Remember that people still live in the shacks so please respect their privacy.

To see the dunes and the shacks, Art's Dune Tours - Tel: (508) 487 1950/1050 is a great way to do it in comfort. Their 4 wheel drive tours are great fun and the drivers are colorful, informative and entertaining. The sunset tour is particularly memorable. Tickets and pickup are located in the center of town on the corner of Standish and Commercial. Don't forget to bring your camera.
Alternatively, you can always hike out to them but be prepared for a good hour's trek and bring water - on a warm day, the dunes can seem like the Sahara.
